Live in good health & happiness
Life can take us in a bumpy ride. Sometimes the road is smooth and pleasant. Other times, there are rocks, potholes, strong winds and storms on our way.
How can we go through life without loosing our health and our good spirits?
I decided to draw from the wisdom of our predecessors to facilitate our journey.
Wise is the one that learns from everyone. Here is some of the advice that could be useful to us, as we are getting wise everyday.
1. Dr. Israel Baum’s office in NY had a sign:
Keep religion, faith in God, good sleep, good music and laughter, in order to keep healthy.
During WWII, almost a third of a million men died in combat; during the same period, heart disease killed 2 million civilians. As we know, one of the main reasons for heart attacks is worry, tension and anger.
The Lord may forgive our sins, said William James, father of applied psychology, but the nervous system never does.
2. When you have a problem, the advice is:
· Get the facts
· Come to take a decision
· Act upon the decision and dismiss all anxiety about the outcome.
Frank Bettger, a top insurance representative in US was loosing money. He studied the facts, to find out that 70% of sales were closed during the first interview, 23% during the second one and only 7% on the third or forth one. He found out to be wasting his time in the 7% of his sales. The answer was to cut all visits beyond the second interview. He decided to spend extra time building up new prospects.
This advice became profitable to Mr. Bettger in terms of health and income.
3. Co-operate with the inevitable.
My father used to say:
For every ailment under the sun
There is a remedy, or there is none
If there be one, try to find it
If there be none, never mind it
Several famous people like J.C. Penney, Henry Ford, or K. Keller, president of Chrysler, have declared in their own words that when their problem has a solution, they act upon it, and if they do not see the solution…they let things handle themselves.
This is probably one of the most difficult things that we are willing to do in our benefit, “Let go”. We feel panicky if we loose control in a given situation, we want things to be the way we desire them, and here we are told, let go.
Epictetus taught the Romans nineteen centuries ago “The only way to happiness is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will”.
4. Think and act cheerfully and you will feel cheerful.
We are what we think. We cannot change our personality quickly, but we can change our actions which in turn, will change our emotions.
When I feel sad, inevitably I will encounter a handicap person. I look up, thanking the Almighty for reminding me that I can change the way I feel, if only I change my perspective, and of course, it always works.
Life is like the school bus, taking us to different places, in our inner lives as well as in the outside world. This journey is very colorful and varied in all kind of perceptions and feelings. Our physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual realms are touched continually giving us lessons, teaching always something new.
Some of us learn quickly, others slowly. Some will pass grades; others will flunk several times, till they had learned the lesson.
All of us have access to wisdom in this school of life. Books, parents, teachers, mentors. The challenge is, can we hear them, can we trust them or we better learn from our own experience?
Is it difficult to have faith in G-d, to get a good night sleep, listen to good music and laugh regularly? I do not think so!
Do we take time to cultivate these behaviors? I am not sure; otherwise the news would be different.
When having a problem, how many of us, sit calmly with a pencil, analyze the situation, make a decision, take action and forget about the outcome. Probably, not many of us do it. Still I believe it is sound advice.
Let go. How easy it is to let go? Problems are part of our personality, to let go, is to undo something that belonged to us, that something can be undesirable and still we do not let go.
It is easier said than done.
Living well is simple. With the right attitude we can conquer worry and live a happy and healthy life.
