Rosh Hodesh Sivan - Shavuot-

And now Israel what does HaShem your God ask of you? Only to fear HaShem your God to go in all His ways and to love Him, and to serve HaShem your God, with all your heart and all your soul, to observe the commandments of HaShem and His decrees (10:12,13)

Shavuot, also called Hag HaBikurim when the farmers would bring the first crops to the Temple. The farmer would thank God for His bounty and place this act in an historical frame. This teaches us that we have to place our acts in a broader context to be complete.

3000 years ago, the Jewish people stood around Mount Sinai being part in the only and unique revelation. God came to man using man’s language to communicate with His creation.

“All the people saw the thundering, and the flaming torches, (Shemot 20). Everybody saw what the Prophets did not see.

The Midrash teaches us that the Revelation was so overpowering that the nation died as a result. God revived them and appointed Moshe to talk to them.

Entering the Pardes: Peshat, Remez, Drash, Sod, each is a higher level of revelation. The person has to be prepared to be able to reach those levels. Ben Azzai died; Ben Zoma lost his sanity; Elisha Ben ABuya became a herectic (Chagiga 14b).

When there is Revelation, there is kedusha. To be able to be a vessel one has to be ready to stand the high levels of holiness. The body should be refined to become a vessel for the Divine light.

Rav Pinhas Ben Yair sais that diligence leads to cleanliness; cleanliness leads to purity; purity to separatness and separatness to holiness; holiness leads to humility and humility dreads sin, leading to piety (Sotah 49b)

Shavuot is calles atzeret as Pessah and Shavuot are linked together.

Sivan is the month when nature blossoms. We feel greater freedom, love and joy. As we say, it is in the air.

Nissan has been the month of transformation for slavery to freedom. We had to change the vision of ourselves, create new paradigms and trust the unknown.

Iyar has the month of healing. It has been hard to change our skin, but we have been doing some work in acknowledging and healing old wounds.

Sivan is the time to receive the fruit of our work. We have elevated ourselves to another level and now we can more in the spiritual realm.

This month is a good time to reflect and act upon the following:

  • Letting go ego attachments. Nullify ourselves and receive what God wants to give. Probably this is one of the most difficult things to do, because we are really attached to our ego. The ego needs to be in control, to feel safe and to create distance. We are asking our ego to relinquish this, and to sure the ego will fight back. To let go we need trust and feel secure that we are fine.

  • Deepen relationships, meet new people, bond with others

  • Talk to God (Hitbodedut)

  • Study Torah. Torah is God’s word to us. When we enter the world of Torah we approach ourselves to God.

  • Increase love & intimacy. Show your love to yourself and others. Say it, feel it.

The better you are, the calmer you feel, the happier you act, you allow yourself and your surroundings to experience some godliness.

We read the portions:

Bamidvar , about counting the tribes

Nasso, “May HaShem bless and safeguard you. May HaShem illuminate His countenance for you and be gracious to you. May HaShem lift His countenance to you and establish peace for you”.
